Form1 Group CEO, Steve Shirlaw, is a strong advocate for investing in the next generation of world-class safety leaders. He firmly believes in the power of apprenticeships and has made it a significant part of his Group business strategy.
“Everybody needs a start – that’s my critical thing,” says Steve. “When I left school, I got the opportunity to get started in a career.”
In Steve’s eyes supporting young people is not only about providing them with a pathway to a successful career but also about promoting their overall wellbeing.
“It doesn’t matter what you’re doing – apprenticeship, traineeship – everyone needs someone to give them a chance and take a risk on them.”
Steve has always believed in investing in his team, in particular his apprentices. Over the years, Form1 has provided many young men and women with the opportunity to learn and grow within the company.
“I have always said that we commit to our apprentices for the entirety. We’ll go through all the ups and downs with them, and the aim is for them to be successful in having their trade certificate at the end,” he explains.
Inspiring A Better Culture
Unlike many organisations, “When Form1 apprentices graduate, they are offered a full-time, permanent position with the Form1 Group,” says Form1 HR Manager, Christian Ure.
Apprenticeships provide a pathway for people from diverse backgrounds to enter the workforce and gain valuable skills and experience. By investing in apprenticeships, effective leaders can help create a more diverse and inclusive workplace, leading to a better culture, better decision-making, and problem-solving.
“At the end of the day, for me, you know you’ve helped someone start their life after they finish school. Getting a trade for some is a ticket to travel, a chance to develop relationships, make new friends, find mentors, and gain life skills.”
Many successful business owners understand the importance of investing in young people and providing them with opportunities to learn and grow. As the owner of a thriving business, Steve has seen firsthand how investing in apprenticeships can benefit both the apprentices and the organisation.
“You hope, at the end, the apprentices you nurture will look back one day and put the same effort into somebody else. You hope, as effective leaders, they will pay it forward, empower another young person, and change their life too.”
